Back in early February, the Syrian government, supported by Russian air strikes, launched a major offensive from the north of Aleppo, capturing several strategically important towns.
The fighting has continued, with the latest clashes coming as world leaders, including the USA, Russia, Saudi Arabia and Iran, met in Munich on Thursday, with the aim of restarting the peace talks between the government and Syrian opposition.
According to Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, Russia has proposed a nationwide ceasefire and is waiting for a reaction from international powers.
The TASS news agency reported Lavrov as saying: “We have put forward our proposals on a ceasefire, which are rather concrete. We are waiting for an answer from the US before offering it for consideration of the International Syria Support Group.”
Al Jazeera’s Rory Challands, reporting from Moscow, said that the USA and its allies would probably view Russia’s truce offer with scepticism.
“The US concerns are that this gives the offensive that’s currently ongoing in the Aleppo region more time to push the rebels back, possibly going so far as a full military victory,” said Challands.
The offensive has led to the displacement of more than 50,000 civilians from Aleppo, tens of thousands of whom have amassed in camps at the Turkish border, and the Red Cross are reporting severe medicine, food and water shortages for those left in Aleppo.
- Pray for Syria, for an end to this conflict and peaceful resolution to the power struggles across the country.
- Pray for all involved in the peace talks, for clear communication and to seek the best for Syria, not for individual power and control.
- Pray for those left homeless and destitute through this conflict, that they will find hope and healing through Jesus Christ.
- Pray for Christians working amongst the refugees, for compassion, grace and love to flow through them, and for many lives to be transformed through their ministry and the working of the Holy Spirit.
