Indonesian Christians are asking for prayer amidst the upheaval and violence at the rally currently happening in Jakarta, against Jakarta’s Chinese Christian governor, Basuki Tjahaja Purnama, also known as Ahok.
Muslim hardliners are accusing him of insulting the Quran.
Ahok is widely popular in Jakarta for his fight against government corruption and his ability to raise the standard of living. These very achievements, however, have incurred the wrath of Muslim radicals.
It is amazing that an ethnic Chinese Christian was elected to a prominent public office in this largest Muslim population nation in the world. Ahok was swept into power in 2014 with his friend and ally, President Jodo Widodo.
However, he has, since then, been the target of death threats, false accusations, and even black magic spells! But through it all, he has proved steadfast in his faith in God for his protection and wisdom to govern.
20,000 police are present at the mass rally, but so are many radical jihadists, who are openly planning to target as many Christians as they can.
Terrorism expert, Sidney Jones, says militant groups have sent instructions to followers to follow the example of a recent terrorist attack in Tangerang, on the outskirts of Jakarta: “Follow the example of the brave young man in Tangerang. Take advantage of the thousands of police deployed during the protest, Follow his example and stab people.”
Although President Wikodo has urged calm, Jones accuses the government of allowing the situation to mushroom out of control.
- Pray that God will protect Governor Ahok and his family and give the Governor wisdom and peace in the midst of this turmoil.
- Pray for protection over the Church and Christian Believers throughout Jakarta and Indonesia. There are already reports of rapes and violence towards Christian communities. Pray for God’s intervention and divine protection over His people at this time.
- Pray for protection for President Widodo as he tries to maintain order in the face of threats against his government.
- Pray for forgiveness for the Muslim jihadists, because many of them do not know what they are doing is wrong. Pray that they will encounter Jesus Christ and come to realise the truth of who He is as Son of God and Lord of all.
Ephesians 6 vs 13: “For our struggle is not against enemies of blood and flesh, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers of this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.“
