Women’s rights in Iran

Women in Iran face discrimination in law and practice in relation to marriage and divorce, inheritance, child custody, nationality and international travel, as well as a range of justice issues relating to violence, abuse, and participation in society and the political arena.

The President of the country, Mr Rouhani, spoke of the need to recognize the equality of women in a speech given last week, stating that Islam held no barriers to this. The Supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei disagrees. While stating the he agreed that justice should be given, he said there is not equality.

The culture of sexual discrimination feeds sexual harassment, and attitudes that perpetuate violence against women. 66.3% of Iranian women experience violence in their lifetime. Many women are unaware that violence committed against them is a crime, and so the cycle perpetuates itself.

How would God want to reveal himself to these women? How would he want to see justice for these women? Ask him and pray.
